Forgotten Sounds
For this project I was tasked with creating a visual language. I have always been interested in how music and sound are closely linked to memory. In choosing my collection I decided to research these historic instruments and create a fictitious museum exhibition called Forgotten Sounds. I really liked this idea of looking at forgotten instruments of the past and creating a visual language for them.
For this project I thought it would be helpful for museum goers to create an app for this exhibition where visitors can learn more about these instruments and put into context what era they come from. I choose to create icons to visually categorize and group these instruments. - Researching music different types of music notes and clefs music in many ways is communication through symbols and icons. To create a visual iconography language of my own I look for inspiration in my sketches alongside the many common music symbols. For my main logotype I developed the shape by using the negative or “forgotten” space inside a treble clef note. In playing around with these forms I was able to create an abstract note that closely resembled one of my initial sketches. More abstractly this form resembles a conch shell which in many ways symbolizes hearing and sound.
